I agree, let Ma Nature be in charge.  I live in Western Montana and we
too get a lot of freeze/thaw.  I have tulips and other spring bulbs that
come up early and I feel if they are fool enough to want to poke their
little selves up then they have to tough it out.  This spring I'm going
to burn all my dead junk in the garden with a torch.  The article in the
Tall Bearded iris magazine convinced me and I can't wait to get started.
We've had a few days in the 50's and temps are building higher every day
but we still have some below 32 degree nites.
