Re: OT-CHAT: Neil Mogensen?

Dear Linda and all---

I came home from Duke a week ago tomoroow, remarkably early considering what
was done was the equivalent of being run over be a Mac truck. Everthing that
I could have desidered was accomplished except for one thing. My swallowing
allows a certain amount of bypass into the bronchia, putting me at risk for
pneumonia and infection. So I remain NPO (which I have been for 15 months)
giving my reconstructed esophagus a chance to heal, to discover that is what
it is insead of part of the colon, and to let swelling go down.

In June of 2001 when I had the first indications I had a problem which turned
out to be cancer, I had no idea I was in for such a rough ride. This was my
nineth surgical procedure since November 01, this one involving three separate
teams--a thoracic, an abdominal and a plastic surgical team. The surgeons and
staff at Duke are phenomenally good and I got to know more of them than I ever
dreamed or desired I would.

I go back for an additional swallowing study on March 20 to measure whatever
change or improvement there has been. In the meantime I'm to lift nothing,
walk a lot and follow orders to the letter.

Did I tell you more than you ever wanted to know? If so, I apologize.

On to iris---the first of the new germinants poked their heads through the
ground yesterday. I was beginning to wonder if I had done something fatally
wrong as this is astonishingly late for this to be happening. Considering the
wierd winter we have had I should not be surprised, I suppose.

I'll be mostly in "lurker" status for some time yet. I spend very little time
at the computer yet.

Neil Mogensen z 6b/7a (?) near Asheville, NC
