The ordinance in Mendocino County prohibits the propagation, cultivation,
raising, or growing... nothing further. It does not prohibit any grocery
store or restaurant from bringing in produce and selling the produce, or using
it in cooking, or bringing in GMO feed for livestock. Therefore, as the years
go by, if agriculture production outside our county has superior production of
any sort of crops, our county citizens could very well find themselves
outpriced by better markets which may include GMO's. I would think they will
be on the shelves, and probably already are. And if one buys livestock feed
(and has no idea whether it contains GMO seed which could drift by the wind,
one has no idea what could show up growing in the fields. That's why many saw
it as poorly worded.

Yeh, I'm pretty sure everyone who opposed the ordinance saw that it was flawed
in how it was written. However, I've never known a test to see if you're
smart enough to vote.
I went out on the Internet to find out about these Blue Carnations, and find
"The necessary gene for delphinidin pigment production has been isolated by
Florigene (a plant biotech company in Australia) from petunia and transferred
to carnation." I also found "The (blue) Carnation cut flower will be sold at
florists throughout Australia and will be released onto the large European and
Japanese markets during 1997, where Florigene hopes to gain a slice of the $10
billion world market for carnations." We have nurseries in Mendocino
County... guess they won't be growing blue carnations or blue roses. You're
right about Marijuana, we also have an ordinance permitting citizens to grow
the stuff for medical purposes, and to grow small amounts to sell to those for
medical purposes. It's still against Federal law, but the local Sheriff is
abiding by the local ordinance and not citing anyone for medical marijuana
use. There is even a doctor in town who advertises in the local paper that he
gives out marijuana prescriptions. What do doctors make an hour handing out
prescriptions?

Colleen, the exact language in this ordinance defining GMO's is
"Genetically modified organisms means specific organisms whose native
intrinsic DNA has been intentionally altered or amended with non species
specific DNA. For purposes of this ordinance, genetic modification does not
include organisms created by traditional breeding or hybridization, or to
microorganisms created by moving genes or gene segments between unrelated
bacteria."

I bet this company in Australia could take the red pigment from another flower
like a red rose, or poinsettia, and make a red iris. You'all invite me to
your house when it blooms in your yard, please.
