Neil:
Don't know about the causes; it could have something to do with a disruption
to the internal growth tip where new leaves are generated. I usually break
off the pineappled greens, but pineappled rhizomes often have no increases
present, rarely seem to generate new increases and I lose most of them. The
also seem extremely attractive to aphids, nesting inside the swollen leaf
spikes. I don't think the aphids have anything to do with the cause, but they
are usually present on pineappled fans.

Thanks, John, for the remarks about POEM OF ECSTASY.
Has there been any progress made since the mid-70's on identifying cause of
and/or treatment for pineappling?
As I understand it, one of the causal factors is climate--I've lived too
far
north to see much of it.
The apical meristem seems to lose its organization in long continued heat
or
high soil temperatures, and I have seen a few relatively minor expressions
of
what I assume to be the same disorder. I think I remember someone saying a
treatment that has had success is to slice off the growing terminal,
letting
unaffected side increases (if any) pick up the growth. They could be or
would be normal.
Am I remembering something there accurately or just imagining it?
The last I remember reading about the subject (I've skipped the discussion
in
TWOI so far) was that no consistent pathogens have been found. The cause
remained a mystery
