I had sent this earlier but it didn't get to the list.
I got an off list mesage alerting me to the fact that Randolph had a species list of chromosome counts and in there he had Iris swertii as having 24 chromosomes. I tried to find Sweetseri in the AIS checklist but had no matches.
This adds to the confussion. I understand that sometimes iris swertii has been confused with other plants, Ma Mie comes to mind. The name is so close to Swertii and Sweeteri that there has to be some connection here.
Anyone have any ideas?
The iris swertii with 24 chromosme count can't possibly have any aphylla in it.
The Sweetseri very well could. The botanist that suspects alphylla connection must be looking at the Sweetseri clone. The question is which is the real swerti.
My "Iris swertii" blooms at 30" with foliage at about 10". Not much branching. The height of bloom stalk compared to foliage is a very noticable feature.
