Linda, many years ago, I read that you can tell which of your seedlings will
be rebloomers by the root system at planting time. Those that have already
developed full healthy root systems with lots of feeder roots are more likely
to be rebloomers. (reported)

I've some evidence to indicate this may be true. 1917-1Re had a huge root
system when I planted it in late June of 2005. It did try to rebloom but got
stopped by the early freeze. However, in that season of excessive heat and
little natural water (2005) 5 other seedlings tried to rebloom. None struck
in my memory as having the root system that 1917-1re exhibited!

I've bloomed enough rebloomers to know that the reverse of that is not
necessarily true. Poor root systems and slow growing plants can also send up
stalks out of season.

In any event, a good root system should bode well for the plant???

Romantic Evening also looks like it could be dying in my garden (is it a
dormant?), but bloomed to height last year with two stalks. First time it
bloomed for me, so I hope I'm not losing it. Bought it in 2002.

Seedling 1709-1re (grand child of RE) produced 2 full stalks last year,
quite tall, and 1 stunted stalk. All within a one square foot of space. The
full stalks presented first so maybe they used up the nutrients? Or maybe the
stunted one was meant to be first and the last freeze caught it?
