I don't buy it. Rattling dry seeds will still germinate.
I've got all my 05 seeds on what I'm calling "2nd winter". Some crosses have been on 2nd winter since the first week of Feb. I put the seeds in the refrigerator (they are in little film canister type cans) with no water on them. I expected that they would dry out and that the drying out would keep them from continuing to germinate. Not so. I have had something like six germinants from rattling dry seeds. They're just lucky I was checking to make sure everybody was following the rules.

Do you allow the soil in you loaf pans to dry out during the summer, sitting
uncovered? I seem to remember someone saying if they dry out after being
hydrated, they could take years to sprout. Not true? I was planning to plant
my leftovers out, fenced in by mid-sections cut from 2 litre cola bottles,
with a handful of mulch stuffed in on them to keep them moist all summer. I
figured it would also keep the cats from scattering them all over.
Hmm - maybe another experiment.
