Re: RE: HYB: Second Chance Germination

Yes, Mary Lou, I did let them sit unmulched through the summer, including the 2 months drought we had here. When I used to plant the seeds in the shallow loaf pans, I would be careful to take out the seedlings one by one and leave as much of the dirt in the pans undisturbed as possible. I would sometimes get germination in 2 or 3-year-old pans which had sat out in the extremes of weather all that time.

I'd encourage you to go ahead with your experiment. -- Griff

Do you allow the soil in you loaf pans to dry out during the summer, sitting
uncovered? I seem to remember someone saying if they dry out after being
hydrated, they could take years to sprout. Not true? I was planning to plant
my leftovers out, fenced in by mid-sections cut from 2 litre cola bottles,
with a handful of mulch stuffed in on them to keep them moist all summer. I
figured it would also keep the cats from scattering them all over.

Hmm - maybe another experiment.
