HYB:First Bloom
It's that time again! Anyone that has their own seedlings gets to see
irises that no one else has ever seen! Sometimes that's good! <vbg>
Just a warning to people very new at hybridizing irises. What you see with
maiden bloom (first bloom) is not necessarily what you get. Sometimes it's
better and sometimes it's worse. Some people think this discrepancy is due to
the nutrients carried by the mother plant, and not a result of genetics! I
haven't a clue. I just know that you can't always trust a maiden bloom to be
true.
I think I'm most disappointed when an awesome bloom falls apart in the
second year of bloom. I've certainly had it happen enough times! It does seem to
happen more often than the reverse!
Beware the 'fantasy' irises! 'If it's too good to be true' . . . holds true
in baby irises too!
