Linda, writing on arilbred chromosomes, remarks
:AAUUUGGGHHH!!!
Well, yes, that's a pretty good summary. ;)
This stuff *can* be comprehended, but you have to take it slow.
Learn a little, then re-read the chapter in _The World of Irises_,
learn a little more...etc.
I think that one of the problems in the arilbred world
is our nomenclature. The chromosome situation with the arilbreds
is really closely analogous to that of the medians. But because
we have easy-to-use names for the median classes, it is more
digestible.
Consider these two statements:
Standard dwarfs are fertile, but crossing an SDB with a TB
produces a sterile intermediate.
Amphidiploid oncogeliabreds are fertile, but crossing an
OGB with a TB produces a sterile OGB- quarterbred.
The first statement is a lot easier to understand because
you don't have to struggle with the terminology at the same
time you're struggling with the concepts. For us aril nuts,
"amphidiploid oncogeliabred" roles off the tongue (and mind)
as smoothly as "standard dwarf", much to the bewilderment
of onlookers.
Happy irising, Tom
