tetraploid arils

Yes, it's best to have some practice growing the pure arils before investing
in plants for breeding. Unlike arilbreds, pure arils are pretty tempermental
culturally. Tennessee is pretty humid for their taste. Nevertheless, the
tetraploid arils (numbered seedlings, mostly from Sam Norris) are regularly
available through the ASI plant sale. That's where I got mine and most
of them are doing fine. I even put some of the more vigorous ones in the
open garden amongst the violas and petunias--although this is unlikely to
be a good strategy in most parts of the country!
