Gunnar asks
:Are there any criterias to have to be fulfilled when you are naming
:new hybrids or is it just up to yourself ?????????
Yes. There is an international code for naming plant cultivars, and the
American Iris Society has made a few small additions to it for irises. It
includes restrictions on the length of the name, restrictions against
using Latin names (which might be taken to be botanical), use of
articles (A, THE) and punctuation within the name, etc.
But the code is really quite generous. Only rarely would you invent
a name that would violate the code and need to be changed.
