Iris Heights

TBs and BBs bloom much shorter than usual for me -- those registered as 34" -
36" inches do well to get to 24" - 28" -- but I've seen them bloom closer to
registered height in a well-kept valley garden.

Looking at the climatary atlas and comparing the United States with the lands of
their ancestral species, the optimal climate for TBs can be seen to be that
part of northern California, Oregon and Washington that's west of the Cascades.
I'd expect varieties that originate there to grow shorter in other parts of the
country, and varieties that originate in the east to grow taller on the west
coast.

In the arilbreds, which grow well here, I find that some hybridizers' iris are
consistently shorter than registered, and others' are consistently taller than
registered -- so I think climate is very important.
