Iris Heights

Here in my rather unfertile, gravelly soil, irises seldom get to advertised
height. At the AIS convention in Portland, Ore. 2 years ago, I was amazed at
the heights of all the irises, especially the TBs. The BBs were blooming at
the height I'm used to seeing my TBs at! I had NEVER seen TBs that tall. I
have to admit, the size of them, in a couple of gardens in particular, seemed
a bit grotesque to me.

I don't mind if an iris is a bit short. At least I won't have to worry about
the wind and rain taking it down. I have discarded a couple of cultivars
that regularly decorated the ground with bloomstalks. If it needs staking to
look decent, it won't find a home here--too much to do to stake irises!
