chris - believe it or not, despite all the rot and molliegrub (=scorch?),
botrytis doesn't seem to be much of a problem here.  the only time i see it
is on purchases from those un-named west coast vendors of big fat rhizomes
and very rarely  on local club rhizomes.  it is rarely lethal here.  did you
see clarence's suggestion for leaving them out to dehydrate for a few months
before planting?  perhaps that isn't possible in your short growing season -
i certainly plan to try it here..
