I think Lonnie's idea is excellent. The daffodil society has just done
it, and it sounds exciting. I have copied a description of what they
have done:
official introduction will take place at the ADS Convention in Baltimore.
There are two versions: The Illustrated Data Bank and the Hybridizers
Version. Both will be available in either Mac or IBM.
The ADS has licensed the worldwide rights for the software for the daffodil
world . The IDB will be introduced at $ 149.95 and will include a free
update ( adding about 400 to 500 more photographs and the 1996 new
introductions ) at the end of 1996.
The ILLUSTRATED DATABANK has hundreds and hundreds of full color
photographs ( 400 to 600 cultivars by Baltimore and over 1000 by year end
) along with all recorded information. The goal will be to eventually
include as many photographs as are available.
The relational aspect of the Data Bank allows the display of up to a seven
generation genealogy. Both programs allow the user to select the flowers
that they grow and to work with their flowers and not have to wade through
all 15,000 records. A complete planting section allows for copious
recording of plot plans, planting notes, and locations. A text processor
and notes section will let you record unlimited data on a cultivar.
Absolutely no computer knowledge is needed to use and enjoy the program.
All commands are accessed via the mouse. Complete, contextual, "Help"
screens are available at all times. The advanced user can take advantage of
extensive and sophisticated "Searches and Sorts" to compile subsets of
records that might be of interest. Printing of reports and Genealogies is
simple and quick.
The Hybridizers Version includes the complete IDB. It will sell for
$295.00. There are "sections" for seedlings, selections and naming
provisions which allows the user to record and track their own seedlings. A
"What If" screen allows the selection of both a seed parent candidate and a
pollen parent candidate. Both genealogies can then be compared with
photographs.
Minimum Configuration:
Due to the computers display requirements for such a large number of
photographs, the following minimums configurations are needed to run the
program.
IBM - Windows 3.1, Windows NT, or Windows 95, 8mb of RAM ( 8mb is a
minimum, 12mb or more is recommended ), A color card and monitor capable of
at least 256 colors ( Thousands or millions is recommended ), at least 35mb
of free hard disk space is needed to install the program.
MacIntosh - System 7.0 or greater, 8mb of RAM ( 8mb is a minimum, 12mb or
more is recommended ), A color card and monitor capable of at least 256
colors ( Thousands or millions is recommended ), at least 35mb of free hard
disk space is needed to install the program.
Those that have seen and used the program have told us that they feel it is
of significance and may be "revolutionary" for our little daffodil world.
Both programs are available after April 30th, 1996 exclusively from:
