Have you tried using an empty trash can? That ought to be tall enough,
although the plastic ones can be too lightweight to support weight adequate
to stop them from blowing over. But an old-fashion aluminum can would be
ideal, I should think.

Wal-mart (I am offended! No Wal-mart!) carries tall thin metal cans
intended for use in children's rooms; even a 13-gallon plastic kitchen can
would be sturdy enough to support a load of rock or bricks.

If all you're getting is rain, you can protect lower blooms by
slip-covering the bloomstalk with the plastic wrapper the newspaper comes
in. (An uppermost bloom will be flattened.) But if you're really getting
hard winds, do *not* try slip-covering the flowerstalk: That merely gives
the wind something broader to shove against.
