In a message dated 97-03-13 11:14:20 EST, you write:
<< The term 'wide cross' appeared in the current issue of the RIS
Recorder in reference to some of Monty Byers reblooming output.
Therefore, is crossing a rebloomer with a non-rebloomer a 'wide
cross?' Is crossing a TB (remontant or not) with a Space Ager a
'wide cross?'
Please help me understand the term? >>
Walter, I seriously doubt if there is an "official" definition of a "wide
cross." But my understanding is that it is a cross between irises of
dissimilar backgrounds. For example, I have registered a prodigious
reblooming white iris as UNCHAINED MELODY which resulted from the cross
HARVEST OF MEMORIES X SOAP OPERA. If you examine the pedigrees of the two
parents you will find that here is almost no duplication. One line is heavy
on cold climate rebloomers and the other is heavy on irises which are
notoriously poor survivers in the East. I would call this a wide-cross.
