Linda, I hope it did not get quite as cold as forecast!  I can empathize with
your situation.  It is exactly the kind of weather change that causes the
most problems here, although we haven't experienced it yet. Here it happens
in April and May.   Irises can take the cold--it is the false starts and then
return to cold that causes freeze damage and subsequent rot. 

Perhaps we should be looking for cultivars that are slow to break
dormancy--but it is so exciting to have early flowers!
