weather blues - hard freeze preparation

Well, there go the early and mid-season blooms. And here comes another round
of rot. At least nothing seems to be in bud yet except the standard dwarf
RASPBERRY JAM. BLITZ is waiting for warmer weather. It is forecast to be
in the mid-20s in Knoxville tonight and it is usually at least 5 degrees
colder here in my frost pocket.

After all the discussion on the list last year, I did try something different
this year and covered all my rhizomes with about an inch of gravelly soil to
keep them from warming up as fast in the spring and also insulate them a
little bit from cold. That does seem to have increased rot in some varieties
(makes more room for something tougher : )) but at least now I will get to
see if it helps the early and midseason bloomers 'stay warm' tonight.

My planters with my baby irises are too big to haul into the house, so I am
layering them with 2 liter cola bottles filled with water (Linda's Heaters)
and piling more around the outsides. Then I will cover the whole setup with
a triple layer of Reemay.

Trying to look at this weather event as a grand experiment and screening
trial. : <
