Dear Sharon,
You are so right about the list being a place where people can ask
questions and discuss things! Thanks for reminding me that it's okay not
to "KNOW" all the answers. I have a couple questions that I asked on
Friday's chat but didn't get answers. Maybe you or someone else can answer
them.
1. When we crossed Clouds Adrift x Lady Friend we were never successful.
Are there some iris that just won't cross? Or did we do it wrong? We put
a brown paper bag over the pods to keep out the insects and keep the cross
pure. Was this what caused the problem? Was this necessary?
Is there a certain time of day that is better for pollinating?
2. Our arilbred, Pink Betterment, has sent up an 18" bloom stalk that is
getting ready to open. The stalk has drooped way over almost to the ground
so we put in a stick and tied it up. We have never had this problem
before. Is this a quality of arilbreds or could it be something else?
Thanks again for the invitation to ask. I think some of our listers have
just been snowed in too long. A walk out amoung the iris is music to the
soul and medicine for the heart.

Sorry, Tom, but I couldn't figure out an appropriate tag for this one....

That puts the situation in the proverbial nutshell.
I launched the first e-mail robin BEFORE the IRIS-L came into being, but it
certainly didn't inhibit the growth of the list. The only thing that can
kill
the list is the non-participation of its own members. It's big enough to
accommodate many lurkers -- but if EVERYONE sits back and waits for someone
else
to ask a question, the informative discussions will soon dry up.
I can only speak for myself, but I will stay on the list as long as there
are
questions I can answer. You haven't seen much of me lately, mostly because
the
tradition of posing questions has been getting lost amidst the demand and
complaints.
If there's something you want to know: all you have to do is ASK. This
group
includes experts in many different fields -- but NONE of us are
accomplished
mind-readers.
