I live across the Bay and south of San Francisco. (Just to calibrate my
neighborhood). Unfortunately I don't think there is a simple answer to your
question. The real answer is: It depends where in San Francisco your friend is
going to live.

ESS EFF (SF) has parts that are buried in the fog and cool marine air for a
lot of the summer. There are also parts that get lots of heat (but rarely
above 90F). As long as they are in an area that gets sun 5-6 hours a day they
should do fine. Mine grow like weeds. The joke around the club is that I can't
grow anything short enough to win a ribbon.

The biggest problem is that anything that takes a certain amount of cold below
40F to set blooms properly, won't do well here. BB's and MDB's just don't do well.

Most of the bay area is indeed Iris heaven. No borers, wonderful weather, no
ice storms, rich soil and plenty of sun but low humidity. I know, I know,
earthquakes (knock on wood) and mudslides (only if you are silly enough to
build a house on the side of a cliff....)

Mostly the Iris equivalent of Camelot. (Boy am I going to hear about this....)

Can you tell me more about where they will be living?
