<< I germinated I setosa seeds last year but I put them in the fridge with
diurnal cycling (in the fridge over night and out of the fridge during the
day) for 5 weeks before they started germinating. The SIGNA seed germinating
instructions say a minimum of 3 weeks in the fridge is required for any iris
seeds. >>
I've germinated a lot of various I. setosa seeds and while I've never tried to
germinate them without some chill, I've never failed to get excellent results
by planting them in a pot and leaving them outside here in Zone 7 from mid-
January until germination, which usually occurs in mid-April. In this matter I
have relied on the research done by Norm Deno in Pennsylvania who found that
I. setosa required stratification, and that they responded to oscillating
temperatures. For further information on this matter check the Archives and
search by "Deno".
I can attest that not all iris seeds require a period of chill or
stratification to germinate. Relying on Dr. Deno's published findings I have
germinated sibericas, laevigatas, ensatas, tectorums, fulvas, and others
inside with no chill whatsoever.
