I forwarded the recent comments regarding archiving data to my son Andrew,
who has been putting the Classification and Handbook back in operation on
dahlias.com. This is his contribution to our discussion on the longevity
of archival materials. Thought you might enjoy it. By the way, the
originator search has been repaired and is now working!

In ten years you will not be able run any of the programs
which created the data on your CD's.

In twenty years you will no longer be able to buy a drive
to read your CD's.

In thirty years the one dimmesional non multimedia data will
be laughed at by teenagers.

In forty years the data on your CD's will be considered of such poor
quality, that re-archival will be a waste of time.

In fifty years popular Media Vision events will be held to
celebrate the CD mania that was.

In sixty years the media nostalgia fad will wear off, and
articles will appear telling you how to transform your
father's old CD's into decorative nik-nacs.

In seventy years the acronym "CD" will be re-cycled to
represent some unpleasant side effect of a new social disease.

In eighty years anyone caught carrying digital media larger
than 5 mm/mm will be arrested for stealing the neighborhood library.

In ninety years a great media frenzy will erupt over a previously
undiscovered cache of "giant circular digital tablets which
contain 2 dimensional representations of primitive flora."

In a hundred years someone's wife will be saying, "How many times do I
have to tell you to get rid of that old junk in the basement..."
