Dear Ruth,
You are probably right about the aims of most members of TBIS, but there are a
few agitators who have soured some people on the organization. Especially
disturbing was the message to iris-talk which made accusations about the
honesty of the AIS board. My impression from the November AIS board meeting
was that many thought the TBIS should be trying for Section status, rather
than Cooperating Society. Bobbie Shepard's committee has drafted a proposed
AIS by-laws change which should make this possible.
I am a life member of AIS and most AIS sections, but have not joined TBIS
because of the turmoil and the vague feeling that TBIS is trying to overpower
or intimidate the other sections. There have even been rumors that TBIS
doesn't want to be a section of AIS, but a completely separate organization.
I get the impression that they feel slighted even though all AIS conventions
are held at TB bloom time. Therefore, TB irises get a lot of judges' votes,
while it is like pulling teeth to get judges to even look at dwarf irises. TB
enthusiasts should not feel threatened by other sections having their own
conventions. This is the only way the other classes of bearded and beardless
irises can be seen.
Now I'll get off my soap box.
Dorothy Willott, President, Median Iris Society, Section of AIS
