A superb issue indeed. Ruth, Ron, Phil, advertisers and a host of talented
writers have given us a very good 'read.'

I do wish to comment on one item -- Celia Story's review of Bill Shear's
book. Specifically, where Celia comments; "Photo captions, while generally
helpful, are not perfect. On one page we see Dave Niswonger and Rick Ernst
amid a vast field of miraculously identical bicolor "seedlings."..."

I took the photo in question during the 1994 National Convention in
Portland and also provided the information for the caption. It was indeed,
taken in the Cooley's Gardens seedling patch. If you look closely at the
photo, you will see that the 'identical bicolor "seedlings"' exhibit a
range of colors and forms. I agree that the usual reaction, on viewing the
Cooley and Schreiner seedling acreage for the first time, is "No way!!!"

During the convention, Rick toured his first bloom seedlings with a number
of noted hybridizers, some of whom are on this list. A hybridizer is not
often afforded the privilege of having helpful advice given and work in
progress critiqued, by nearly a dozen recipients of the Dykes Medal. Rick
DID get some good natured kidding about his 'ten acres of Edith Wolford
look-alikes.'
