AIS: A Modest Proposal

From: "Walter Moores" <wmoores@watervalley.net>

Yesterday or today in one of the messages about the AIS/TBIS thing,
somebody mentioned the AIS Symposium being a symposium for tall
bearded irises. True, and its name was changed several years ago to
the Tall Bearded Iris Symposium. I have always voted whatever ballot
I have been sent - the Judges' Choice Ballot (now defunct), AIS
Awards Ballot, and the symposium (whom some people call -not my
words - a 'joke.' Check the percentages of those who actually
return the ballot in order to figure out if the term 'joke' is
applicable.)

My modest proposal is to change the name back to the AIS Symposium
and to allow all irises (bearded, non-bearded, species, etc) to be
placed on this symposium. To get the ballot started, take the
results of the AIS Awards ballot and the current Tall Bearded
Symposium and list all of the winners to determine the ballot and
then the entire AIS membership votes the top one hundred irises from
the lists I have mentioned. Then, in following years take the top 100
symposium winners from the first year and add in the current AIS
Awards ballot, eliminating any duplicates. I think this would make
everybody happy and would include everybody's favorite irises,
whether they be MDB's or whatever and a new passion I have...species.

Each section/cooperating society now has its own symposium, but the
AIS Symposium would be all inclusive. The sections/cooperating
societies would maintain theirs, and the TBIS could handle the
symposium for the tall, bearded ladies and could call it the Tall
Bearded Iris Symposium.
