Hi, Dennis. I checked my journal and found that in both '96 and '97 our I.
cristata and I. verna bloomed around the first of May in our garden in
Louisville, Kentucky. However, in '95 the cristata bloomed on April 21.
Everything else was early that year, too. I even noted that I saw a firefly
in mid-April -- it must have been really confused!

Speaking of wild irises, are you familiar with Sam Norris from Owensboro, Ky.?
He collected and propagated an I. cristata form from around Leitchfield,
Kentucky, and I just learned that Joe Pye Weed Garden is offering it in their
catalog this year. He also crossed pardanthopsis dichotoma (formerly I.
dichotoma) with belamcanda chinensis (Blackberry Lily) and what came from that
is what nurseries now sell as "Candy Lily". (This information is courtesy of
my good friend, Bob Strohman, who is much more educated about species iris --
and a lot of other things -- than I. He couldn't remember the botanical name
for this hybrid other than it is something "norissii".)

Good luck with your photo-safari!
