I was told this years ago too, and on many occassions, I have leapt out
of a warm bed at 6.00am to hose the tomatoes. The main problem with this
theory is that if the temp is below freezing, the water in the pipes and
hoses will quite often be solid, so there's nothing available to wash
off the frost.
I have discovered that it is more effective (if you have forgotten your
covers the night before) to cover the plants in the morning, before the
sun comes up. As I am home based, I can remove them later.
I have occassionally left the covers on well in to the day, with no ill
effects.
