Personally, I think the answer is "yes". I'm sure I'll get some grief over
that one.....
When that person becomes an RVP, it is CRITICAL that he/she selects a Judges
Training Chairman that (1) keeps impeccable records and (2) has "been
around" enough to know who-knows-what in that particular region (or if a
newer member, has been so active and "snoopy" that he/she has pretty well
scoped out the folks who claim to be judges). If one REALLY wanted to get
anal-compulsive, the Judges Training Chair could set up a spreadsheet,
listing the various classes of irises and judging topics. Plug in the
judges' names. Poll them to find out which schools they've attended and
WHEN (approximate dates, like 1942 or 1986). This will quickly reveal who
doesn't have what. Now, a 3-hour judges training school doesn't mean
diddly, if the judge sleeps through the school, daydreams, or is indelibly
dumb. Nonetheless, it could give the RVP/Judges Training Chairman a clue as
to what types of schools the region has been exposed to and what types need
to be scheduled in the immediate future to correct the deficiency.
We are very spoiled in Region 22. Every time you turn around, we're having
a judges training school somewhere in Oklahoma or Arkansas. The topics are
well-rounded, and the instructors among the best. So we have no excuse!
In your case, where your handful of judges is literally spread out over an
entire continent (hmm, big region, huh?), all this isn't so practical, is
it?
