Vince sez:

As a new RVP, and someone who is trying to line up judges for shows
for the first time, I think that it would be very difficult to do
this. I am familiar with most of the judges from our region. Quite
understandably, most of them wish to actually enter stalks in the
shows. So they are out. We are close enough to Region 19 and Region 4
that I can get judges from there, but I have no great knowledge of
their skill level at judging all types of iris. I may know that Judge
X grows a lot of medians, and would therefore be a good choice for an
early show, but I wouldn't know if he/she was experienced in judging
species. If a bunch of species iris are suddenly brought to the show,
what if there is no judge there with experience growing them? "We're
not sure if this is a good example of this species, so we aren't going
to judge it. You get no ribbon." Recipe for a lynching...
What if judges are picked based on their familiarity with a type of
iris, but the weather changes things? Our show last year was supposed
to be at the height of the TB season, but because of the early spring,
there were a lot of LAs and SIBs instead. "We're sorry we invited you
to judge. We know you only look at TBs..."
What about those regions with a sparse population or a shortage of
judges? The available pool can be pretty small in some areas - you may
not be able to find judges experienced with all types of iris.
