Yep, they're evergreen. They'll die down during winter a little bit, but
they're not like siberian irises or dormant daylilies and completely
disappear. That's why I try NOT to even look at my garden in the winter
months -- I get to worrying if certain things are DEAD or just HIBERNATING.
Actually, some Louisianas will tend to go dormant in the SUMMER time. Makes
sense, when you consider their native habitat gets mighty hot and dry. Many
of the swampy areas where they grow and bloom in southern Louisiana dry out
to marshy pasture land during the summer months. I can't testify to the
natural habitat for those from north of Baton Rouge (like, the Arkansas
varieties), but the Arkansas-blood varieties tend to REALLY go dormant
during the summers here. I "push" them and won't let them go dormant
(water, and use mulch to protect the base of the plants from sunscalding).
I've had some years when they went dormant in the summer and DIDN'T COME
BACK! So I give them a little bit of extra water, about the same amount as
a well-cared-for daylily.
