Maureen:
Yes, having an iris region bigger than some continents does pose its own
unique set of problems, huh? But Canada has some great talent, and I speak
from first-hand experience. I had the privilege of tutoring a young chap
from central Alberta named Tom Johnson a few years back. He would come down
here for bloom season, so we did judges training in the garden (including
seedling patch) and at a couple of our shows. I haven't counted, but I
suspect I have worked with right at 100 apprentice judges over my past 25
years as an AIS judge (including over a dozen from Italy), and can say,
unequivocally, that he was the finest student judge I've EVER worked with.
A natural. A keen eye, good taste, incredible sense of balance and
proportion (in the garden AND on the show bench), a pleasant, balanced
demeanor, and well rounded in his iris education (especially to have grown
up in such a limited climate). He's now in Salem, OR, but we know he is
CANADIAN blood!
