Hi Listers,
Now that you've had the chance to read my sick poem let me explain....
I had inquired a few weeks ago about what appeared to be aborted bloom stalks.
Now that it warmed up and the snow cover melted I had a chance to investigate
some more. Well, it basically is rot, pure and simple. The main fans have
rotted on many, many of my tall bearded rhizomes. I was out with my spoon
(thanks Lowell Baumunk) cleaning them up and bleaching them. I believe Linda
Mann had a pretty good idea of what was going on since she is fighting the
good fight along with me in a similar climate.
Anyhow, my arilbreds (with the exception of Stars Over Chicago) have fared
very well and have not rotted. By the way, Dennis Kramb lost this same AB to
rot as I was just visiting his "Garden Graveyard" on his web site.
Hysterical!
Also, the worst hit TBs seemed to be rebloomers and the ones that fared the
best were SAs. I also noted the worst rot was in the bed that I amended the
most. (Fresh soil, superphosphate, and alfalfa meal) Perhaps I made it "too
sweet" for them. The increase was fabulous but the rot was devastating. Let
this be a lesson to me....
NO ROT AT ALL ON ANY MEDIANS!!!!!! Whew!! Let me make out that dues check
to the Median Iris Society.....sign me up. Perfect irises for my nightmarish
winters here in Wisconsin. They all look perfect all the way from MDBs to BBs
and even aril-medians.
