Oh Denise! Some things you should learn right now:
2. Never discuss your weight or your iris purchases with your
husband.
(That is if you want to keep your husband!!)
Gardens are for enjoying whether you build them $10. at a time or
$1,000.
Well, I'm going to put in my nickel on this. For those who don't know
me, I have been labeled obsessive-compulsive. If I don't have it, I want
it. If you have it, I want it. If nobody has it, I want it.
I live on a regular city lot, but, unfortunately for my dogs, I have
converted the back yard into more iris beds than grass beds. The front
yard is just over 1/3 flower beds. I plan on lengthening them this year
by about 2 feet each. This way they'll get better sun. And I plan on
putting a side bed along the side of my house. My neighbor is a single
woman, and has to either mow her own yard, which she hates to do, or pay
someone to do it. I'm talking with her about making the space between
our houses into one large planting. So far so good. BTW, I mean "iris"
beds.
I also always "donate" a goodly amount to both the clubs I belong to
during the "Christmas in September" program, and to the AIS Silent
Auction since they started that. In return, they always let me bring
home quite a few of the irises they're auctioning off. Ha! Ha! This does
not include the ones I buy from the hybridizers. And since I am so very
fortunate in knowing so many of them on a first name basis, I try to buy
at least two or three from each one.
I enjoy the iris, and cut several bloomstalks throughout the spring to
bring to the Nursing homes. They enjoy them so much. What do others do
with their stalks? I open my garden to the public also, and invite one
and all to come by and look. I've recruited a few people into the club
in this manner.
When you love something so much, you just can't help but be enthusiastic
about it. And when a stranger comes around and sees that, they start
asking questions. That leads to interest, and that sometimes leads to a
new member. I also invite new members over to see my garden, and
encourage them to bring a friend. Maybe between the two of us, that
friend will also join, so that the two can come to the meetings
together.
I LOVE THEM ALL!!!!!!!!

least for the next few days)
