Diana, what a good idea to take some of your stalks to the nursing
home. You may never know just how much pleasure they may bring to
someone who used to be able to garden and can no longer do so. My
grandmother always told me to give away any plants that I could spare to
anyone who wanted them, and I would never lack for plants myself. That
has certainly proven true in my life! In fact, very many times I am
sure I have too many plants. That is because my wish list is never
fewer than 100! You are all very restrained in your purchasing habits!
Anyway, for many years our local club has taken stalks from our show
that exhibitors didn't want to take home, to the local nursing home. We
have stopped doing this the last few years, but this year we will be
better organized and deliver them again. It takes only an extra half an
hour, and they are so appreciated. I would encourage all clubs to
consider doing this at the end of their show. Last year my daughter
beat us to the punch and gave her best stalks to an elderly lady who was
so happy to receive them. I didn't see her do this, and reprimanded her
for giving away her rosette winners. I was mightily ashamed when she
told me what she had done. I hadn't even given her a chance to explain
in the first place. Children do teach parents lasting lessons, and this
is one that my daughter taught me.
