There were posts recently on judges judging too harshly,
and not taking inexperience and weather into consideration.
I am a newbie judge, and don't consider myself to be a
particularly good exhibitor, but I don't think that judges
should have to bend over backwards to overlook faults. When
you see a stalk with a spiderweb, complete with spider, or
a spent bloom, or leaning sideways because it was just
stuck in a bottle with nothing in the neck, I don't feel
the urge to ignore it. Such things are part of the grooming
of a stalk, and are easy enough to do. To ignore them
encourages such sloppiness in the future, and is unfair to
those exhibitors who have spent time to properly prepare
their stalks.
Weather related issues are hard to handle, because NO
season is ever normal!!! In shows where I am working, I
will tell judges that it has been a bad year for aphids, or
there was a storm last night, or that the Siberians are
growing short this year. BUT, it is up to them how they use
this info. I think some people have a tale of woe in hopes
that the judges will somehow ignore the damaged blossoms,
even though the damage was more likely to be from rounding
the turn into the parking lot at 47 miles an hour than from
a freak hail storm localized in one backyard...
I'd like more exhibitors to be around after the judging,
to ask the judge why a stalk got a HM instead of a blue,
even though it had three open blooms. I don't think that
most judges are quite as capricious as the slighted
exhibitors think...
