I was especially interested in the leaf spot disease discussion although I
seldom have it. I didn't realize that I should remove the leaves
immediately when it did appear. I only cleaned them up at the end of
summer with my regular fall cleanup.
When I first became seriously interested in iris culture, I was told to
dip my rhizomes (before planting) in a permanganate of potash (POISON)
solution. It supposedly would take care of leaf spot as well as rhizome
rot and various other diseases. I haven't used it for many years, but I
think it's still available through a pharmacy or farm supply store. It was
also used to doctor ill chickens.

Just passing on what The World of Irises (published by the American Iris
Society) told me:
"If the iris planting can be freed of leaf spot for two years, there should
be no further infection unless introduced from another garden."

I believe it. I'm ruthless about keeping my stuff clean and I have next to
no
fungal spot and do not spray. Cut off the bad stuff when it first appears
and
get it out of the garden. Get rid of any cultivar that repeatedly
demonstrates a tendency to be a plague ship, and don't buy plants from
people
who have a history of sending you things that break out in spot. Be wary of
freebies from friends who have disease, and treat any stuff coming in as if
it had spot already.
