Yes, I repeat, the judges are supposed to be voting for the iris and
not the hybridizer! In the case above, it was the sympathy vote and
eligibility of those irises associated with the deceased that got
them the Dykes'. This could play out again this year because
MESMERIZER is the best of the three Byers' irises.
I never voted for either of the Byers' winners because THORNBIRD is
not my color and form and CONJURATION is terribly out of proportion
(smallish flowers on stalks that are too tall and with flowers often
not showing the full complement of appendages even in the terminal).
The key word in what I've said is 'supposed.' I am outvoted by
regional preferences and those judges who live in apartments or
nursing homes and no longer garden or no longer travel to other
gardens at regionals or national conventions. These judges are
persuaded by 'talk' or the pretty color pictures and not by the
performance of the irises. I can think of quite a number of judges
in my own region who never leave the region at bloomtime. Are they
qualified to vote the AIS judges' ballot?
I wish I could finish this post with the answer to the problem.

from Ian Efford of Ottawa planted two years ago, especially a species
type pink that is candelabra branched and a real sweetie.)
