All of these should do well as far as z3. They've needed little to no care
in our z4b area as long as they have poor to average soil and good drainage
(just as the beardeds prefer.). Perennials are all quite hardy and the
annuals are frost tolerant as well as self-seeding.
Perennials: Veronicas (all except prostrata), scabiosa, sedums, aconitum,
Oriental poppy (if you're lucky enough to have chosen rebloomers),
dracocephalum, some daylilies, camas, columbines, Centauria (dealbata,
montana), echinacea, German statice, catananche, and campanula takesmania
(contain these last 2!).
Annuals: Rhoeas poppies, CA poppies, violas.
