I'd like suggestions for the opposite of the ideas so far given---
What can I plant near my iris fans (in Z. 3) that will be
"more interesting" (no offense, folks) when the iris blooms
have (sniffle, sniffle) finished for the season?
--or that will actually contribute to good iris
health/soil comp./etc... ?

Phlox, Prostrate Phlox, Columbine and Poppies that bloom during TB
season. Peonies also make an interesting backdrop for some iris but
mine have not taken off yet. I also have a large rugosa rose that
blooms all at once that makes quite a picture. I love gold iris with
the orange poppies, and white gerard's phlox. And EdithWolford looks
great with pink and maroon pyrethrum daisies. I think the pink tones
bring out the blue in the falls and are pastel enough to make the
yellow show nicely. I am sure they would look good with any blue,
purple, or yellow iris. As well as white. I also have a number of
bulbs that put on a nice show with the iris. I am still working out
details with my gardens and would love to know of any other sugestions
