On one of the other iris forums I frequent, there is a gardener
interested in knowing which TBs I've managed to grow here in northern
MN. I thought there might be some interest in this here, as well, so I
went back through my iris databases and did some investigating. I've
only been keeping these searchable databases for a few years and have
only been collecting significant numbers of irises since 1999, so my
information dates back to that year.
As I have mentioned here before, TBs have a very difficult time in my
climate and growing conditions. In years with minimal snowfall in my
frigid climate, TB losses are high. In winters with adequate snowfall
(white mulch), losses are much lower.
This first batch of numbers represents the number of TB cultivars that
were viable in my iris beds at the end of each growing season. In other
words, the 1/1/02 list represents all TBs that were alive and kicking
at the end of the '01 growing season. At that time, 31 of the TBs I
planted in 1999 were still alive, 110 of the TBs I planted in 2000 were
still alive, and 70 new TBs were planted in 2001.

52-2004
These numbers fascinate me. I've never extrapolated these statistics in
quite this way before. It's easy to see which years involved bad
winters with insufficient snow cover. For instance, the winter of 02-03
resulted in the loss of 68 out of 91 new TBs planted in '02. And the
winter of 01-02 was just as bad. OUCH!
Anyhow, for those of you not bored to tears already, here is a list of
TBs currently growing in my beds and the years in which they were
originally planted here. I've noted the ones that have been planted at
least since 2001 with no bloom (those planted 2002 and later can still
redeem themselves by blooming this year, if they haven't done so
previously). I've also *** the cvs that have done particularly well
here.

It is important to note that the TBs planted in '03 and '04 haven't
survived a minimal snow winter yet (and only one or two have bloomed).
Now that they're well established and acclimated, it'll be interesting
to see how many of them croak in their first minimal snow winter here.
Sorry for the long post. I hope someone besides me finds it of interest.
