Neil,
Thanks for responding. I always thoroughly enjoy your
discussion of iris ancestry -- so much useful
information.
And I'm glad to hear that 'Clown Pants' is doing well
for you. I hope it's as cooperative a breeder for you
as it's been for me. And as you might have gathered
from some of the pictures I've posted recently, I've
successfully used (timofejewii X variegata) as pod
parent with cengialtii pollen, and as pollen parent on
'Floridor'. But I've noticed that all of the pod
offspring so far, seem to have no pollen. However, the
one 'Floridor' X (timofejewii X variegata) that has
bloomed I think does have pollen. I tried 'Clown
Pants' on (timofejewii X variegata) last year and got
a few seeds but none have germinated yet.
I think Terry Varner has done some hybridizing with an
"Astrachanica", but I don't recall if it was Kalmikij.
I'll have to check my old Ohio Gardens catalogs but I
seem to remember at least one hybrid, called 'Astra
Girl'. He mentioned in one catalog that this species
is a "sleeper" [has great potential] and throws many
interesting seedlings.
By the way, (I'm pretty excited) it looks like I've
got pods forming on pallida from pollen of furcata. My
furcata looks similar to an aphylla -- it has deep
purple flowers and branching from very low (maybe at
the rhizome). Although it only grew maybe six inches
tall, it had a budcount of five because of the
branching.
