ReHYB: question - genetics of haft marks?

I don't think that plicata genetics are responsible for haft marks. They may carry the genetics of haft marks as the haft marks fit well with the plicata pattern and no efforts , consequently , have been made to select them out. As you have noted , sometimes a plicata crosses with a non plicata produces offspring without haft makes. I have introduced very cleanly marked plants ( eg: Ermaosa Skies) from plicata parentage with absolutely no haft marks. This would suggest tthat they are not an intrinsic part of the plicata genetics. I strongly suspect hafts marks are a separate genetic factor. I think that indeed some ( actually, quite a few ) plicatas have the genetics for haft marks but as a separate genetic factor. They just haven't been bred out as they were not distracting, or even very noticeable on background of plicata markings, as they are very similar.
Remember that it took a long time to breed out the haft marks from selfs, etc.

Any guesses as to how the seedlings will sort out on the haftiness
gradient?

Linda: Mostly "haftiness", "spray patterns", or whatever you choose to call
it (not my cup-of-tea either) seem to indicate the presence of one or more
plicata genes. I do not know if it is possible for a bearded iris to be hafty
without any such genes; but just about any plic X non-plic cross will give
some hideously hafty dogs. Oddly, luminata genes do not always seem to have
the same effect; and a solid color cross to a "fancy plicata" may get luminata
genes from the cross, and therefore appear to break the rule. Oddly, I once
crossed Filibuster X Gnu (Ghio luminata-plicata x broken color from (plicata x
broken color)), and got all black cherry bitones with clean hafts.
