A few more data points - one of the bee pods from a cream yellow
IMMORTALITY X CELEBRATION SONG seedling produced either yellow or white
seedlings the first year. So far, all of the second year germination
seedlings have been some type of purple.
Two of the third year germination seedlings from IMMORTALITY X
CELEBRATION SONG are the tallest of the cross. One of the 33 seedlings
from the first year was tall; all the others have been more or less the
same height as IMMORTALITY. Two from that cross that germinated the
first year were purple selfs; no other purple selfs have shown up. One
purple and white amoena the first year. Of the 6 or so additional
germinants in following years, 3 or 4 have been amoenas. Only two
seedlings have rebloomed so far - both from the first year germinants.
Conclusion? Some traits <are> more abundant in groups of seedlings that
germinate the first year versus those that take two or more chilling
cycles to germinate. That may matter in some crosses, not in others.
And I don't expect the same traits would necessarily sort out in other
types of crosses the same way they did for these. Just a thought to
keep in mind that if the combination of traits you were hoping to get
from a particular cross doesn't show up in the first year germinants, it
may be worth going to the extra trouble of saving seeds for another
round of chilling.
Any of the rest of you have observations of this type of thing you have
time to share?
Bloom is <finally> winding down a little here.
