Yes indeed. It's pleistocene gravel outwash, high in organic matter, highly variable texture, but lots and lots of gravel, rocks, sand.
When doing bed prep, if it's a new row, I spray with Roundup to kill everything, then try to work it deep once using a 2 ft subsoiler, followed by one or two passes with a 6 tined spring tooth cultivator (big tractor) to bust up the aggregate ;-)
After that, I use a minitiller to make the raised rows, no tillage after that. I also mulch heavily with chip mulch when I can get it.
I let the Rumex get away from me this year so am now adding to the seed bank :-(. The only good news is that Roundup will kill it. I thought I had gotten rid of it before planting this particular area - it's only a short section of row- maybe 3 ft, but I guess I need to just abandon it for a few years.
