I thought I had wiped out a stand of mugwort with all out chem war. It skipped almost a year with no signs of life - then - I'm back!! I decided I was going to dig it out and was blown away by it's dense woody root system way over a ft deep. I really enjoyed building a fire, throwing the witch on it and watching it turn to ashes. Funny thing is I've never noticed seedling mugwort in that same area.
Heard this factoid? Buried lambquarter seed will lie totally dormant until it gets a brief moment, like a couple of seconds, of sunlight. Then it will germinate even if it gets covered again. How does it do that!? Read one fellow talking about using his tiller by moonlight to avoid so much lambsquarter. lol
I let the Rumex get away from me this year so am now adding to the seed bank :-(. The only good news is that Roundup will kill it. I thought I had gotten rid of it before planting this particular area - it's only a short section of row- maybe 3 ft, but I guess I need to just abandon it for a few years.--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRIS
