It occurs to me that blue-green foliage is a characteristic of Iris
pallida, perhaps the most hardy and rugged of all TB ancestors. So it may
not be that the leaves themselves do anything, but just that they are an
outward sign that the plant has inherited pallida toughness.

Tom (and all),
Some Japanese iris and Siberian iris also have blue-green foliage and seem to
be more vigorous, hardy, and disease resistant. Also, usually is associated
with nicer, upright foliage habit (stiffer foliage). Don't know where it
came from, but it wasn't pallida !! ;->
Also, in Japanese and Siberian, those that have purple leaf bases are
recognized as being more vigorous, and hardy.
