PCN: heartland growers (was OT: BIO, WELCOME)

Howdy!

Speaking of not being able to grow PCNs, I had an informative conversation
with Bob Ward at our show Sunday. Bob, as y'all know, is remarkably the
current honcho of the PCN section. I say remarkably because Bob lives in
Arkansas, which is nowhere near the Pacific Coast. Arkansas is one of those
places in which PCNs supposedly shrivel and die. But he grows them, and he
has over the years passed out enough seedlings to other Arkansans
(including my mother) that I can say without a doubt PCNs grow very well in
Arkansas.

Bob says the trick to growing PCNs is to leave them alone. Don't hover over
them, don't fertilize and tweeze and spray and whatnot. Let them be what
they are: self-sufficient perennials.

He makes it sound so easy. Of course, he's a horticulturist, which means he
knows *how* to leave a plant alone.
