I too raise daylilies and iris in the same beds and have excellent 
results with both.  It may be because my rows run north and south on 
sandy alkaline soil in zone 5 or it may be blind luck but they do very 
well.  It could be the wild mint that constantly tries to take over my 
yard in one area and the bindweed in another, the plants may feel that 
old united we stand, divided we fall thing!!!!  We get VERY little 
rainfall here too.
